We are two information scientists who study operations and decision technologies. In a recent study, we investigated whether players can get hot in live-game situations. Our analysis revealed that some players are consistently "hot" during games, making more shots than expected after two consecutive shots. When we looked at all players, we discovered that when a player makes more shots than usual after making consecutive shots, they are more likely to revert to the shooting average by missing the next one. Hot hands exist, but they are uncommon.
