South Africa is set to unveil one of its most significant cultural and scientific tourism developments with the launch of the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Opening on 22 June 2025, the R120 million, EU-funded project promises to boost regional tourism while offering visitors an immersive experience highlighting Africa’s ancient natural heritage. Jointly developed by the Department of Tourism, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), South African National Parks (SANParks), and the Free State provincial government, the centre is located within one of South Africa’s most scenic protected areas.

The centre showcases a globally significant fossil discovery—the world’s oldest known dinosaur embryos—and offers interactive displays covering palaeontology, geology, archaeology, and BaSotho cultural heritage. It also includes training and economic opportunities for surrounding communities, with newly certified tourist guides set to graduate during the launch. Designed to support sustainable tourism and local development, the Kgodumodumo Centre is expected to increase visitor stays in the region and amplify the Free State’s appeal among heritage, family, and adventure travellers.
