Happy Wheels (Free), a bloody physics-based trials game by Fancy Force, shook up the iOS community last week when it debuted on the App Store and immediately rose to the top of the free game's ranking. Back in 2010, Happy Wheels was first made available as a Flash game, and it has since developed rapidly. Happy Wheels has been a tremendous hit in the world of browser games with its cast of absurd playable characters and cars, as well as a community-driven level-creator with over 6 million user-created levels. It makes me feel a little foolish that I was completely unaware of it until it appeared on iOS last week. Hey, I'm elderly, I have no idea what these wild youngsters these days are about.

In any case, if you were a big fan of the Happy Wheels browser version, you would have noticed that the iOS version is glaringly deficient in the material when compared to its more established sister. You shouldn't panic, however, since the stripped-down version of Happy Wheels that was launched for iOS was completely intended, according to a post by creator Jim Bonacci on the game's official website TotalJerkface.com. For the sole aim of getting the game approved into the App Store and gauging how well it was received, Bonacci purposefully uploaded what he believed to be the game's safest version. As stated by Bonacci:

You may have observed that there isn't a user-level browser. Additionally, for each of the 15 tiers we provide, there is only one character accessible. Since getting Happy Wheels approved into the Apple App Store was the primary goal, the game was launched in this manner. The Segway guy is perhaps the friendliest and most manageable of all the original characters. The first thing I didn't want the people evaluating the game to witness was an irresponsible father and his youngster exploding as they were crushed beneath a vehicle.

In addition to violence, Bonacci was concerned about the level editor and the potential for user-created levels to include content that is against Apple's rules. Penises or anything, you know. Not for the first time, a developer has expressed similar worries. In any case, user-generated content may be the lifeblood of a game's long-term success, as titles like Geometry Dash ($1.99) have shown. It's encouraging that additional content is planned for the iOS version of Happy Wheels since it seems like that's the case with that game as well.

In addition, Bonacci is aware that Happy Wheels is being played by a brand-new audience since it is now the most popular free game. He says the following about it: "I know there are many new casual players who have never played the game before, and I'd want them all to know, ideally as quickly as possible, that there is a lot more that they haven't seen. When we have some good content, we will provide "featured" levels for additional characters and a user-level browser. You now have the information directly from the source. Download Happy Wheels for iOS now, and in the coming months, keep an eye on the Updates tab in the App Store for exciting things that are coming.
