Kenya has begun a major rhino translocation project, relocating 21 eastern black rhinos to Segera Conservancy in Laikipia as part of a long-term conservation strategy. Spearheaded by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in partnership with the Zeitz Foundation, the initiative was officially launched on 24 May by Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano. The 18-day operation aims to enhance genetic diversity and habitat range by relocating rhinos from the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
The project forms part of Kenya’s national plan to grow its black rhino population to 2,000 individuals by 2037. Establishing Segera as a new rhino range is expected to contribute to creating one of the largest interconnected rhino habitats globally. Beyond conservation goals, the initiative is also intended to generate socio-economic benefits for the region through employment, training, and environmental education.
