Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has outlined a multi-faceted provincial strategy to boost economic growth and position Gauteng as a leading tourism destination. Speaking at a media briefing following the Executive Council meeting, Lesufi emphasised the critical role of tourism in economic revitalisation and job creation. Key initiatives include strengthening safety and cleanliness across urban areas, rejuvenating inner-city spaces, and enhancing the quality of visitor experiences through planned infrastructure and service improvements. The Premier highlighted urban safety and crime reduction as central to restoring traveller confidence.

The province is also advancing a comprehensive skills development drive focused on the tourism and hospitality sectors, supported by proposed partnerships with national education and labour departments. Complementing these efforts, Gauteng Tourism Authority is investing in youth and small business empowerment programmes. Internationally, the province has secured a trade partnership with China’s Hunan Province, opening access to export markets for local products and strengthening ties with key inbound tourism markets, particularly China and India. With initiatives such as the trusted tour operators programme and the reinvigoration of attractions like the Sterkfontein Caves, Gauteng aims to expand its tourism appeal while fostering sustainable and inclusive economic development.
