Three Cameroonian marine scientists have completed specialised training in scientific diving in Marseille, France, following the United Nations Ocean Conference. The programme, led by French institute Septentrion Environnement, equipped the conservationists with skills in marine species identification, underwater mapping, regulatory knowledge, and emergency response, all aimed at enhancing their efforts to protect the Manyangé na Elombo-Campo National Park—one of Cameroon’s key marine biodiversity sites and a critical habitat for sea turtles.
Representatives from the African Marine Mammal Conservation Organisation (AMMCO) and the community-based Tube Awu participated in the training, which marks the launch of Cameroon’s first national scientific diving initiative. The new qualifications will support marine research and biodiversity monitoring in Ebodjé and surrounding coastal areas, contributing to the government’s broader marine and coastal ecosystem protection efforts.
